As introduced by LG Display, META Technology 2.0 is a technology that surpasses the limitations of picture quality, allowing for even more vivid and bright images that are lifelike and realistic, as if spread right in front of your eyes. The newly evolved MLA+, META Multi Booster, and Detail Enhancer have been integrated into a single display, enabling astounding picture quality and detailed expressions. OLED professionals TaeRim Lee and JaeKyeom Kim sat down to tell us more about this amazing technology.
META Technology 2.0, Unleashing a Whole New Level of Brightness
Tell us about the newly released META Technology 2.0.
There was a recent buzz surrounding META Technology 2.0, a core OLED technology announced at CES 2024. The term for the amount of light emitted from a screen is luminance. As a first for OLED TV panels, META Technology 2.0 made it possible to achieve 3,000 nits, just one year after META Technology 1.0 surpassed 2,000 nits. This amount of brightness equals that of 3,000 candles. To put things in perspective, a standard movie theatre screen has a brightness of about 60 nits, while a standard LCD monitor has a brightness of around 300 nits.
META Technology 2.0 is the culmination of the most advanced display technologies existing today. From MLA+(Micro Lens Array+) to META Multi Booster to Detail Enhancer, all these wonderful technologies have been integrated to complete META Technology 2.0. Through this more vivid and brighter OLED, you can now enjoy ultra-realistic and lifelike images on screen.
How does META Technology 2.0 enhance the user experience?
META Technology 2.0 will make everyday moments more special with precise and detailed images. Viewers can appreciate the unique colors and details of nature without distortion in scenes depicting snow shimmering under the sun, transparent ice under the eaves, billions of stars sparkling in the darkness of space, ripe red tomatoes, and more.
Such innovative display technology converts imagination into reality and makes it possible to deliver a new level of light. Through this, LG Display came even closer to achieving its vision of “You Dream, We Display” as well as the ultimate goal of delivering nature in its authentic form, known as “Natural Reality.”
What were the challenges faced during the development of META Technology 2.0 and how were they overcome?
I think that for a new technology to be released into the world, the key challenge is overcoming real-life limitations. We also need effective cooperation between relevant departments. Technology-wise, it was difficult to optimize the lens angle when designing MLA+. In order to resolve this issue, we implemented intricate processes and intimately cooperated with various departments. After conducting repeated rounds of testing and making necessary adjustments, we finally found the optimal angle for the lenses. If all of our professionals had not fully utilized their knowledge and experience to overcome these challenges, META Technology 2.0 would not have been born.
Astounding Light and Colors Delivered by MLA+ and META Multi Booster
How is MLA+ technologically significant?
There are 5,117 lenses per pixel. Based on a 77-inch TV, a total of 42.4 billion micro lenses create patterns that draw light outside of the screen. This is what we call Micro Lens Array or MLA. MLA uses minimal electric currents on the device that expresses the images, so not only is it very stable, but also extremely innovative as it boosts luminance by maximizing the reuse of lost light.
Building on MLA, MLA+ is the optimization of lens angle using big data. By drawing out light that had been previously lost due to reflection within the panel, this technology produces a drastically brighter screen, while high luminance effectively expresses the contrast between light and darkness. As a result, viewers can vividly experience a three-dimensional waterfall or sunlight reflected on each droplet of water.
What is the role of META Multi Booster?
The fundamental strength of OLED comes from self-illuminating pixels. META Multi Booster, the algorithm that intricately examines and adjusts the brightness of each scene, has been added for an even better display. META Multi Booster’s sophisticated analysis and real-time calculations optimize the level of brightness in order to perfectly capture how dynamic or still a scene is in great detail.
In addition, peak brightness has been enhanced by 42% to 3,000 nits and color brightness by 114% to 1,500 nits compared to META Technology 1.0 for more intricate images. As a result, bright areas become brighter, and dark areas become darker.
To Capture the Details of the Darkest Areas
Please share how Detail Enhancer was created.
Detail Enhancer, as its name suggests, was an intense focus on details. One day, I wondered if I would be able to show the details of the darkest parts of the dim background. The Detail Enhancer project started with a desire to articulate subtle differences in natural brightness to achieve richer expressions.
What is META Technology 2.0’s Detail Enhancer?
Detail Enhancer is an algorithm that accurately expresses and delivers the creator’s intent, displaying precise colors and intricate gradations even in the darkest areas. “Gradation” refers to the gradual progression that depicts hues from the brightest to the darkest shades on a display. It’s easier to understand when you think about shades transitioning from black to white. Abundant gradation allows for a more extensive expression of colors, resulting in a smooth transition between shades. In contrast, low gradation has limited colors, so color banding becomes apparent instead of a smooth, fading gradient.
We utilized a new data processing technology to enhance the picture quality of the gradation. This is a technology unique to LG Display that can express various colors and gradation using limited colors. For example, alternating very small black and white pixels appear as gray to the human eye, meaning that gray can be expressed by just using white and black. Detail Enhancer expresses images in depth by enhancing full-range brightness detail, accuracy, and color gamut.
How does Detail Enhancer change the viewing experience?
Detail Enhancer will deliver an even more astonishing viewing experience than ever before. You will be able to see previously imperceptible parts of images precisely, vividly, and intricately. Because the screen itself is completely different from before, you wouldn’t be able to take your eyes off it. Once you’ve experienced META Technology 2.0 enhanced by MLA+ and META Multi Booster, it would be hard to go back to any other display. Your eyes would already have been exposed to a far superior display at that point.
