Mini LED vs OLED
Which Display Should You Choose?

Oct 23, 2023

What is Mini LED?

This image explains a structure that mini LED's blue light source passes through a polarizing plate, a color filter, etc. to output a screen.

Mini LED is a type of LCD that utilizes very small blue LEDs as a backlight. Compared to the LEDs in a conventional LCD display, Mini LEDs have improved brightness, contrast ratio, and other enhanced features. However, being of the same structure as LCD, utilizing a backlight, it still has the limitations of a non self-emissive display.

Mini LED vs OLED: The Differences in Structure and Mechanism OLED, Controlling Light on a Pixel Basis

On the display with the Milky Way in the night sky, the left Mini LED consists of about 1,500 pixels measuring 30mm width and 40mm length, and the right OLED consists of about 33 million pixels measuring 0.1mm width and length, making OLED more clear in the starlight of the Milky Way.

The smallest unit that controls light independently is called a ‘light source’. OLED has more than 20,000 times the light source of Mini LEDs, and its 33 million pixels independently control light to produce exquisite colors and perfect black.* Meanwhile, Mini LED’s approximately 1,500 light sources control light at a block level, making it impossible to express intricate colors.

Mini LED vs OLED: Picture Quality Which Display Presents Perfect Picture Quality?

There are two parrots on the display behind one parrot, and the color of the parrot on the right OLED screen is more clearly expressed than the left mini LED.

OLED Realizes 100% Accurate Colors

In contrast to Mini LED which has limitations of a non self-emissive display, OLED displays 100% perfect color accuracy, delivering nature’s exact colors as well as the precise colors that the creators intended.

OLED Realizes Clear Images through Low Reflection Rate

Have you ever been distracted by reflections on the screen in a dimly lit area? Unlike Mini LED, OLED's reflection rate of less than 1% provides clear, reflection-free images in any setting.

Mini LED vs OLED: Eye Health Which Display is Better for Your Eyes? OLED Minimizes Harmful Blue Light

Mini LED uses Blue LED as a light source, which emits 7-80% of harmful blue light. On the other hand, OLED emits less than half of the harmful blue light compared to Mini LEDs. OLED has received the “Low Blue Light Display” Verified Mark from UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science proving itself as a display for eye comfort.

OLED Minimizes Eye Discomfort

Mini LED’s severe flicker and glare cause tired eyes. In contrast, OLED minimizes eye discomfort with minimum flicker and glare, and even obtained the “Discomfort Glare Free” verification from UL Solutions.

OLED Minimizes Sleep Disruption

Circadian Rhythm - Daily Melatonin Cycles

The light that emits from Mini LED suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that influences circadian rhythms and sleep patterns. OLED, however, prevents sleep disruption by minimizing adverse effects on melatonin secretion. Enhance your sleep quality with OLED, which has obtained the display industry’s first “Circadian Friendly” Certification from TÜV Rheinland.

Mini LED vs OLED: Environment Which Display is Better for the Environment? Eco-friendly OLED Minimizes the Use of Plastic

As Mini LED requires a backlight, it is composed of up to 25% plastic. Meanwhile, the backlight-less OLED screen is composed of less than 5% plastic, making it a more eco-friendly display as it uses approximately 90% less plastic than Mini LED.*

Eco-Friendly OLED Requires Minimal Components

Sky and trees is displayed on OLED screen, and the illustration below shows that OLED only requires the process of polarizer, glass, and color filter, but Mini LED requires additional process of liquid crystal, optical film, liquid guide plate, reflector, and LED chip.

Mini LED uses numerous components that require dedicated processes for producing each component, resulting in a high carbon footprint. OLED, on the other hand, is leading the way in environmental protection and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by developing clean technology that minimizes the impact on the environment during the entire product life cycle*, from development to recycling.

Mini LED vs OLED: Which is a Better Choice? OLED, the Ultimate Solution

This brings us to the conclusion of the comparisons between Mini LED and OLED. OLED controls light at a pixel level to portray detailed colors and perfect black, as well as presenting clear images in any setting due to its low reflection rate. Because of its low blue light level and minimal flicker and glare, viewers’ eyes are safeguarded even during prolonged viewing sessions and their sleep quality remains undisrupted. Furthermore, OLED is an environmentally friendly choice, as it minimizes the impact on the environment during its entire product life cycle, from development to recycling. If you are looking for a perfect display, OLED is the one and only answer.
