I am in charge of developing and fine-tuning the algorithm that enhances the picture quality of large-sized OLED TVs.
To elaborate, I am in charge of developing the OLED algorithms and ASIC, which are necessities to lower power consumption and optimize a display’s picture quality.
Because technology needs to be developed about 1 to 1.5 years before product launch, sometimes I feel that my work lets me live in the future before anyone else.
We are currently evaluating the technologies that will be applied to the 2024 OLED products. At the same time, we are developing the technologies for 2026 OLED products.
We seem to hear about “algorithms” everywhere these days. This algorithm is also an important factor for OLED.
The algorithm applied to the brightness-enhancing 3rd Gen OLED META Technology is called META Booster. To explain in detail, META Booster intricately analyzes each and every scene watched by viewers.
It discerns the video type and calculates how much brighter it can make the scene for it to be better expressed. The combined algorithms of META Booster determine the luminance and color to be portrayed by each pixel, enabling the expression of a more detailed image based on pixel units.

Truth be told, applying META Booster to OLED was a difficult road.
Previously, many technologies such as HDR were invented to enhance the brightness of OLED, but as these technologies existed mainly to enhance product specsㅡmeaning enhancing just the brightnessㅡthere were limitations in maximizing the display’s actual performance.
Against this backdrop, META Booster was developed by overcoming these limitations. We not only enhanced the brightness but also succeeded in increasing the performance of OLED.

It is natural to eat when you are hungry, but eating entails decisions such as what to eat, where to eat, and whom to eat with.
Similarly, while it is a natural course to enhance the luminance, or brightness, of OLED to its maximum, we had many things to consider for META Booster. Furthermore, as the technology that would include META Booster was already in development, we were running out of time.

Fortunately, algorithm experts pulled through by arranging the options for the concept and control of the required algorithm, designing the necessary hardware and software, and validating the basic performance level. If it weren’t for the commitment and determination of the people involved, we probably wouldn’t have been able to develop it in time.
I realized that in the end, technological advancement is only possible when people take action.
Even now, the algorithm is still a development in progress, so we are preparing solutions against variables by implementing it in various products while preparing for the next version of META Booster.

Isn’t technology fascinating? Even as a developer, I marvel in front of technology and ponder its endless possibilities.
But we still have a long way to go and so much more to do. We are not yet at the final OLED destination. Therefore, we will dive deep into the foundation of the current algorithm to achieve even more outstanding expressions.
Our end goal is to create an ultra-realistic display that is impossible to tell between reality and the screen, as well as a 3-dimensional display that mirrors natural light as closely as possible. I am ready to race toward that goal.
